31 Aug 1839“My Dear R—, I hasten to inform you of the alarming state in which the settlers in our part of the country are placed, in consequence of the blacks; for the last month they have been killing cattle in all directions, both outside and within the boundaries; the last three weeks they have commenced their havoc here among the cattle of Messrs Ryan, Roberts, Hurley, and Fennell, and mine to a ruinous extent—in fact, one-third of the increase are lost through them, for what they do not kill they scatter over the country.”
